The name of Anafonitria has a really unique story behind it.
that during the fall of Constantinople a cargo ship sunk off the coast
of Zakynthos. The locals found the icon of the Madonna bearing her child
among the rocks and built a church, and then the monastery on the spot.
It was said that the icon was emitting a flickering light, as if it was
crying out to be found. From this Anafonitria, meaning ‘she who cries
out’, takes its name.
Anafonitria and the roads that surround the main square of the village of Anafonitria is one of the main regions on the island of Zante where you will stop and browse in local traditional market stalls. You are able to purchase local produce from Zante including honey and olive oil, as well as a large selection of traditional handiworks, linen and beautiful embroidered tablecloths.
