The region of St Nicholas in the north of Zakynthos is developing
into a popular holiday spot for up-market tourists looking for classy,
chic Greek island accommodation and sailing holidays. There are many new
villas and studio rooms in this region that have been designed with
comfort and luxury in mind.
St Nicholas, known as Agios Nikolaos in Greek, is a small village
situated on the
north eastern coast of the island of Zante. The region
is characterized by small pebbly coves and sharp cliffs dropping down to
the sea. The famous blue caves are located in this area. The village of
St Nicholas is not a tourist resort as such, but is an increasingly
popular place to stay for people who want an authentic taste of Greece
and a more secluded holiday experience.
There is a small white pebble beach located next to the port of St
Nicholas, the largest marina in the North of Zante. The beach here is
pretty, looking over a small island in the distance with ancient
monastery ruins. Despite being a port village, the swimming waters here
are always clean and clear, and many people enjoy a dip here to cool off
during their trip around the north of Zakynthos.
From the St Nicholas region you can take a number of exciting boat
trips – to the Blue Caves, to Shipwreck Bay, and even across the seas to
the neighbouring island of Kefalonia.
From the pebbly beach at Saint Nicholas of the north, you can sit and
watch the boats roll in. There is a daily summer ferry connection with
the nearby island of Keffalonia, the neighbouring island most famous for
being the wartime setting of Captain Corelli's Mandolin. There are also
always a number of traditional Greek fishing boats in the harbour here,
as well as a few sailing boats to add to the charm – plenty to keep you
entertained while you relax by the sea.
There are a number of tavernas and a few mini-markets along the beach
front at St Nicholas of the north – with fresh fish coming into the port
regularly, this is a great place to stop for a bite to eat by the sea in
Zakynthos.
St Nicholas is ideal for visitors who are looking for an area of
stunning natural beauty, panoramic sea views and a relaxing, peaceful
holiday. This Zante Seaside Village is an ideal area for keen scuba
divers, snorkellors and fishermen and the surrounding countryside offers
pleasant walks.
