Situated very close to the town of Zakynthos, some 6 kilometers at
the South, Kalamaki is a lovely tourist resort, very popular and well
known. This is also the closest resort to the island’s airport.
From the
main Kalamaki resort road, where many of the hotels and restaurants are
located, it is just a short 1 kilometre walk down to the sea.
Situated in the southwest of Zante is the resort Kalamaki. Kalamaki
is a large resort with a beautiful beach and a relaxed holiday
atmosphere. Due to the central location of Kalamaki on the island you
can easily move between Kalamaki, Zante Town, and the nearby resorts of
Argassi and Laganas. Kalamaki is a great place to stay if you want a
peaceful holiday base with a few bars and restaurants to keep you
entertained during your time in Zakynthos.

The popular Zante beach of Kalamaki is one of the longest on the
island, stretching from Crystal beach right down to Laganas. The fine
golden sand of Kalamaki beach makes it a popular spot for tourists
during the summer, in particular with families on vacation. The rocky
cliff, at the far end of Kalamaki beach, at Crystal beach, consists of
gypsum, and is a beautiful sight sparkling in the sun.
You will enjoy swimming at Kalamaki beach – the water here, in the
middle of the Gulf of Laganas, is always warm and clean. Kalamaki is a
really popular spot for families because the beach is wide and the
waters shallow so kids can safely play during their days at the beach in
Zante.
The beach at Kalamaki has restricted opening times, closed from
sunset to sunrise, due to the nesting times of the Caretta Caretta
Loggerhead turtles. As the sun goes down all tourists are asked to leave
the beach so that the turtles are not disturbed during their nesting
process.
Zante is the main nesting ground for the Loggerhead turtles in the
Mediterranean and the South West region of the island is where they most
commonly choose to return to lay their eggs. Subsequently, the National
Marine Park of Zakynthos take a number of steps, including the opening
times of the beaches, to ensure that the protected turtles are as
unaffected by tourism as possible. All the way along Kalamaki beach
there are National Marine Park Huts which are staffed by helpers who can
provide you with more information on the Caretta Caretta Turtles.
Several hotels of all categories, studios and rooms to let are
available both within the village of Kalamaki and in the area around.
Most of them are open from April or May until October and offer full
facilities.
The resort area of Kalamaki is one of the largest on the island – but
without the intensity of bars and clubs found in Laganas. Kalamaki
offers a number of restaurants, bars, and even an Irish pub – so you
won’t be short of evening entertainment during your holiday.
If you do fancy a night in the clubs during your stay in Zante, you
can easily take a taxi from Kalamaki to the neighbouring resort of
Laganas – where the majority of big clubs and bars are found.
