The countryside around Gerakas has a really traditional feel and
there is a beautiful Nature Walk around Gerakas which offers beautiful
views over the beach and the village below.
The development at Gerekas
has been limited by the National Marine Park. Subsequently there are no
huge hotel complexes or resort roads and a truly Greek ambience remains.
The village of Gerakas in the far south tip of Vasilikos Zante, has
one the best beaches in Zakynthos. It is located on the southern tip of the Vasilikos area. The
beach is really spectacular – framed with jagged cliffs and sweeping
golden sand.
The beach here is one of the main nesting grounds of the Caretta
Caretta Turtles and throughout the summer you will see small wooden
structures on the beach protecting their nests. Because this is such an
important natural habitat, the National Marine Park works to protect the
beach as much as possible. Subsequently, this is one of the cleanest and
most unspoilt beaches on the island.
Driving along the Southern Coastal road of Zante you will come to
Gerekas on the most southern tip of the island. This rRegions
of Zakynthos Zante greek islands is nearly
completely untouched by tourism – with just one or two hotels, studios
and villas tastefully dotted around the countryside.
The beach of Gerakas is one of the most naturally beautiful on the
island. The sand here is soft and clean, and the waters are always
sparkling and clean. At the end of the beach on the left hand-side there
is natural mineral mud on the cliff face. You can apply the mud to your
body and let it dry in the sun! This leaves you with silky-smooth skin
and a glowing complexion.
It is at Gerakas that many of the
Caretta Caretta sea turtles build
their nests and lay their eggs, a fact which has made it necessary to
impose strict regulations on tourist activities. You won’t find any
beach sports here, and only a few sunbeds and umbrellas. There are also
protective cages placed around the turtle’s nests to ensure that people
don’t walk on them or disturb them while they are incubating.
There are a few Greek Tavernas and one small bar in Gerakas. The
Triodi Taverna in Gerakas serves delicious, authentic Greek food. There
is also a mini-market for anything you might need during your day at the
beach.
