Dionysios Solomos is one of the most famous poets in Greece and is treasured in Zante as one of their most famous locals. He penned the Greek national anthem, Ode to Liberty, on the slopes of Zante’s hill, in Lofos Strani, just above Zante Town.

By the time your holiday in Zakynthos is over, you are sure to have come across the statue of Dionysios Solomos in the main Solomos Square in Zakynthos Town. You can also visit the museum in San Marco square in town which is dedicated to the life and works of Solomos, and some other famous Zakynthians.

Dionysios Solomos, who lived from 1798-1857, was a famous Greek poet from Zakynthos. Dionysios Solomos wrote the poem Ode to Liberty, also known as Hymn to Liberty, in 1823, of which the first two stanzas became the Greek national anthem.

You can visit the beautiful park of Lofos Strani, in the hills above Zakynthos Town, which marks the spot with a towering statue, where Dionysios Solomos actually wrote the Greek National Anthem.

Solomos was vorn in 1798 to a wealthy Greek family in Zakynthos. At a young age he was sent to Italy, in 1808, where he studied law. Returning to Zakynthos some ten years later, with a background in literature and law, Solomos became famous as a poet during this time, while still a young man.

He left Zakynthos again in 1828 to settle in Corfu, to dedicate his life to poetry. Solomos died in February 1857 from apoplexy. His remains were transferred to Zakynthos in 1865.

Solomos was a very humble poet and was famed for throwing away much of his poetry before he completed it. Many of his poems had to be rescued from the rubbish bin by his students.

Apart from poetry, Dionysios Solomos also played a role as a leading literary figure in the Greek War of Independence against the Turks in 1821.
