The beach of Marathias is really unique - very remote, surrounded by
lush green vegitation, and often without many visitors due to its
remote location on the South West Coast of Zakynthos.
This is a great place for total relaxation, especially if you feel
the need to get away from it all. You can rent a kayak on the beach and
explore the area around Marathias. The beach at Marathias is very close
to the popular Caretta Caretta nesting beach on Marathonisi Island, so
when kayaking around here make sure you look out for any turtles!
The region above the beach at Marathias has one or two great tavernas
if you fancy a traditional Greek meal or snack during your day in the
South West region.
The furthest beach of the South West Coast, close to the coastal
resort of Keri, and about 22 kilometres from Zakynthos town, is the
beautiful pebble beach or Marathias. This is another of our favourite
beaches during the busier summer months as it is rarely crowded and you
always leave feeling relaxed and refreshed.
Just beyond the charming village of Limni Keri, along a rather bumpy
road, you will arrive at the Marathias coastline. There are a number of
places to swim at Marathias - you can stop and jump from the rocks into
the crystal sea, or you can walk down a steep path to the main beach
where there are a few sun beds and kanoes for rent. The isolated and
unspoilt beach at Marathias is ideal for sunbathing and snorkelling.
There is very little tourist development at Marathias and even during
the busiest month of August, it is rarely crowded here. There are no
large hotels in the area and no beach bars or clubs around the beach. On
the beach itself there are just a few sunbeds and umbrellas for hire,
but most of the beach is empty and completely natural.
