Architecture in Zakynthos has quite distinct features, influenced
largely by the history of the island and the various foreign occupations
over the years.
During
your holiday in Zante look out for comparisons of buildings influenced
by the Venetians compared to the more traditionally Greek stone
structures. The architecture of Zante, also known as Zakynthos, in the Greek
Islands, has been influenced by the Venetians, the French and the
English.
Over the year all three nations have conquered and occupied the
island of Zakynthos. In 1953 an earthquake in Zakynthos destroyed many of the beautiful
and original buildings around the island, including large manor houses,
churches, and many neoclassical buildings.
Most of the destruction was
not caused by the quake itself, but by fires started by gas stoves that
were toppled during the earthquake. Nearly every building on the island
was destroyed.
After the earthquake, the Zakynthian people worked tirelessly, whilst
living in makeshift camps, to rebuild the island. Zante Town was rebuilt
almost identically, replicating the original architecture and buildings
that were lost.
