ZANTE MONASTERY OF ELEFTHEROTRIA
When travelling through the central villages of Zakynthos, as you
leave the village of Macherado, going North you pass the Monastery of
Eleftherotria. This is another interesting site to explore during your
holiday in Zante.
The Monastery of Eleftherotria in Zakynthos looks more like a castle
than a monastery. The maroon red and white exterior is very
characteristic of the original colours used in Zakynthian architecture.
Set amongst the olive groves, this red and white monastery, with
castle-like turrets, really stands out and makes for a great photo
opportunity.
The Monastery of Eleftherotria in central Zakynthos was built in
1962. There are currently seventeen nuns residing inside, currently led
by the Abbess Magdalene Bakea.
The views from the monastery are quite spectacular. This charming
Zante Monastery looks over the plains of Zakynthos, through to the Bay
of Laganas, and beyond to the islands of Marathonisi and Pelouzo. If you
are driving past this landmark, it is worth stopping your car and
breathing in the view surrounding the Monastery of Eleftherotria in
Zakynthos.
